Materuni Waterfall, Coffee Tour and Kikuletwa Hotsprings (Chemka Hotsprings)
We like to offer this hiking safari (short, challenging and beautifully landscaped) to the Materuni waterfall with a coffee tour (coffee farm), Chagga culture and a subsequent trip to the hot springs of Chemka (also called Kikuletwa Hotsprings) for swimming and relaxing.
Materuni is home to the Chagga people and is still an authentic tribal village. This charming place is only 15 kilometers from Moshi and is the last village on this route before Kilimanjaro National Park.
The waterfall itself is approximately 80 meters (262 feet) high, making it an impressive sight. Visitors can relax, swim, or simply enjoy the serene ambiance near the waterfall.
On the coffee tour that follows, you will learn how the coffee is grown and processed. Our guests particularly enjoy getting involved in grinding and roasting the coffee beans themselves. Accompanied by Chagga songs and dances, you will immerse yourself in the culture of the locals at the foot of Mount Kilimanjaro. And at the end you can enjoy your homemade coffee and the view of the rainforest.
After the wonderful Materuni and coffee tour, we continue to the hot springs of Kikuletwa.
The drive over partly bumpy tracks, past sugar cane plantations, acacias and baobabs through African bushland, takes you to an idyllic oasis. This beautiful geothermal spring, better known as “Maji Moto” (Swahili for hot water), is one of the most beautiful places in Tanzania. The hot springs are located in an oasis near the village of Chemka and are fed by an underground river from Kilimanjaro National Park approximately 60 km to the north. If the weather is clear, you will have a spectacular view of Mount Kilimanjaro and its two peaks.
The small pond is surrounded by palm and fig trees with huge twisting roots. Little blue monkeys jump from branch to branch, every now and then a monitor lizard sneaks through the bushes… The crystal clear, turquoise water invites you to take a refreshing swim. A natural foot massage/tickling from lots of little fish is include and for free.
Enjoy a wonderful afternoon exactly the way you want. Dozing in the sun, dreaming, chatting with the locals at the small bar, swimming – you decide what happens. In the late afternoon (just before sunset) we return to Moshi in a relaxed manner.
