The hut route, one of the oldest and most popular to the roof of Africa
The Marangu Route (also called the Coca-Cola Route) is the shortest, cheapest and most popular route to the summit. It is very scenic and offers excellent views of the surrounding mountains. On this route you will spend the night in huts.
Marangu is a demanding mountain trekking route lasting at least five days. It is therefore highly recommended to take an acclimatization day at Horombo Hut (3,725 m) (6-day route) and for exemple to visit the Zebra Rocks (approx. 4,000 m) during the day.
The Marangu route, like all other routes, should definitely be approached with the necessary respect and proper preparatory training. No matter which route you choose, the altitude remains – and therefore the crux of every Kilimanjaro climb.
Be sure to walk slowly from day 1 and do not laugh at the repeated “Pole Pole” (swahili words for „slowly, slowly“) of your guide and the passing porters. They know what they’re talking about.
